The village was built in 1976, but its unique architecture, inspired by the Mediterranean villages of the sixteenth century, make it a cultural town of undoubted charm.

The heart of the village is the Altos de Chavón Cultural Foundation.

There is much to visit:

Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón

Altos de Chavón is a place like no other: a replica of a 16th century Mediterranean village in the heart of the Dominican countryside.

Carefully designed by the Dominican architect, Jose Antonio Caro, and by the master designer and director of Italian photography, Roberto Coppa, every detail has been handmade by local artisans.

The village is a cultural center for residents, tourists and artists working from all over the world. Active studios for artists of all means, from ceramics to weaving, to screen printing and everything else, flank the cobblestone streets next to shops and boutiques that show their unique creations.

The Art Gallery presents works by well-known Dominican artists, as well as artists from around the world who help promote a dialogue of creativity and cultural exchange.

It is also home to the renowned Altos de Chavón School of Design, which is affiliated with the Parsons School of Design in New York.

Other sites include an archaeological museum, which offers a glimpse into the fascinating history of the area, the Church of San Stanislao, a 5,000-seat amphitheater and sweeping views of the Chavón River and the Caribbean Sea.
